On Street Cycle Stall Downtown La Crosse

While actually riding your bike into downtown La Crosse has not gotten any friendlier (despite the silver status, more on that in the future), it has gotten a bit easier to park your bike. Over the last year there has been a significant increase in available bike parking in the downtown area and last month La Crosse got it’s first on-street cycle stall adding even more.

You will now find a “cycle stall” occupying one of the parking spaces in front of the newly re-opened Root Note Cafe on 4th Street. The stall
was built by a local blacksmith from City Forge and hold about 9-10 bikes. The rack was one of my  projects projects while I was the president of the Driftless Region Bicycle Coalition (DRBC), with help form other members who saw to it’s installation. Continue reading

Action Alert

Public Information Meeting re: Sand Lake Rd / USH 53 interchange
If you live in Onalaska or ride through there now and then, then you need to be at this meeting Wednesday September 28th, 5-7:00pm, Onalaska City Hall. It looks like they may be trying to remove the bike lanes and other accommodations that were originally in the plan, despite the State’s and County’s Complete Streets policies. So make it if you can! Even with policy on our side, they will continue to strip out bicycle and pedestrian facilities at every opportunity if we don’t show up. Continue reading

Bicycling Books to Read

As some of you may know, by day I am a librarian, really I am. This means, in a very stereotypical way, I love reading as much as I love riding my bikes. When I can sit down in the evening after a nice long ride and read a book about bicycling, pretty much all is right with my world. With that in mind I thought I would share a few of the bicycling titles I have read recently or my favorites, just in case you need something to read yourself.

The Lost Cyclist: The Epic Tale of an American Adventurer and His Mysterious Disappearance
By David Herihy, 2010
I really enjoyed this book. It is full of the romance of the bicycle that was at its height during the Victorian period. Frank Lenz sets out on a journey to bike around the world, this book recounts what is known of his journey and the search, although belated, to find him after he disappears in the Middle East.

CHords & Ankle Straps - Sexy!

With the recent cold snap, freezing temps in September is taking things to far, I have had the opportunity to break out my favorite pants… my cords. Now don’t call me too old fashioned. Corduroys make really good bicycle commuting pants for fall and winter riding. Really!

Many bicyclists who are year round commuters will switch to wool pants/slacks as the temperatures drop. That just does not work for, I am allergic to everything but really high end wools. Sadly, at my pay grade these are not in my price range. That’s why I like my chords. They are snazy enough for where I work and are definately warmer than the slacks I wear during warm weather. Welcome to 2 Wheels in La Crosse, my new blog. Please feel free to leave positive or even logiclly presented critical comments on this blog. Please, just make sure that it relates to the content and purpose of this blog (read About if you are not sure). I welcome and encourage discussion.

The start of this blog marks the beginning of a new phase in my life. After spending three years helping to create and run a biycle advocacy organization here in Western Wisconsin, also know as the Driftless Region, I am moving on to other projects and taking this new freedom and using as I, yes that’s a great big capital i, see fit. Not that I am not part of and support the organization still, it’s just as president of an organization you have certain limits placed on you. Those are now gone.

If you would like to contribute articles, images or other materials here, please feel free to comment or contact me. IF you are aware of an issue affecting bicycling i our area, please let me know as well. I welcome collaborators.
